Learning how to play golf can be a daunting task but with some patience, practice, and guidance it can be a fun and rewarding experience. Here are a few tips that will put you on the right track.
Get lessons
Each and every golfer is different, but all good golfers have one thing in common- fundamentals. To learn the basics of the grip, swing plane, and posture seek out a local PGA professional. Lessons are offered through the pro shop at most every public course and at most driving ranges. Group lessons can be helpful and cost effective for beginners giving you an opportunity to interact with other golfers of your experience.
Practice…Practice…Practice
If there are no shortcuts in life, then there definitely aren’t any in golf. Being a new golfer, your first instinct will be to get out and play as soon as possible. You started this game to play, after all. Resist this urge and when you do play choose a par 3 course. For now, go to the driving range and take a balanced approach to practicing, allotting equal time to chipping and putt g (short game) and iron and driver shots (long game). Focus on hitting balls with all of the clubs in your bag. Start with wedge shots and slowly move all the way up to the driver.

Hitting the links
When you do get out on the course, focus on keeping the ball in the fairway and on the green. The first few rounds don’t keep score. Instead try and become comfortable with your surroundings and focus of hitting good shots. Be mindful of etiquette and always ask your fellow players if you have a question.
Taking advice
People love their own opinions, and in no area more so then on the golf course. If you tray and take swing advice from everyone that is willing to hand it out you will be more confused and uncomfortable with each round. At most, focus just on the too away from your lessons. Take only one or two swing thoughts into each round and always have a goal. For instance I will try and get every put all the way to the hole.
What tees to play?
As a rule you should always play the forward tees when beginning golf. Each course has a designated set of tees for each skill level of golfer. If you are playing with more experienced golfers, don’t feel pressured to play from the longer tees. Other players are generally very understanding and will often be glad to ” Play it forward” themselves.
