LOS ANGELES: Former PGA Championship winner Davis Love III is widely expected to be appointed United States captain for the 2012 Ryder Cup by the PGA of America on Thursday.
The 46-year-old American, a veteran of six Ryder Cups as a player, has long expressed his desire to lead the US team in the biennial competition against Europe.
Love was one of four vice-captains to Corey Pavin in October when Europe reclaimed the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor by a single point in Wales and is held in high esteem by his peers on the PGA Tour.
The PGA of America will officially announce the 2012 US Ryder Cup captain from 10 am CST (1600 GMT) on a conference call at Medinah Country Club in Medinah near Chicago.
“When they’re ready for me to do it or when the players are ready for me to do it, I’m going to do it,” Love said when asked about the Ryder Cup captaincy late last year.
“I think I’ve seen enough Ryder Cups to know how to do it, what we need to do. I’ve been with a lot of captains that have done a lot of great things. If I can just take all those things and put them together, I think we can do it.
“It would be an honour to be the captain and I’d just have to think it through. I’m not going to miss my turn, that’s for sure.”
Love, who won his only major at the 1997 PGA Championship, made his Ryder Cup debut at The Belfry in 1993 when he and Tom Kite beat Spanish heavyweights Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal 2&1 in the opening foursomes.

He went on to represent his country against Europe in 1995, 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2004 while appearing on two winning teams — at The Belfry in 1993 and at Brookline in 1999.
In six Cup appearances, Love earned 11/1-2 points in 26 matches, compiling a win-loss-half record of 9-12-5.
Known for his long hitting, Love has won 20 times on the PGA Tour, most recently at the 2008 Disney Classic where he ended a title drought of more than two years.
The biggest victory of his career, however, came in the 1997 PGA Championship at Winged Foot where he coasted home by a commanding five shots.
What made that major breakthrough even more poignant was that he achieved it nine years after his father, a highly respected golf coach and PGA professional, died in a plane crash.
By clinching his maiden major title in the Professional Golfers’ Association of America’s flagship event, Love could not have honoured his father’s memory in a more perfect way.
As if that were not enough, a stunning rainbow graced the sky on that magical day at Winged Foot as he walked up the 18th fairway in the final round to the cheers of the gallery.
“The best thing about winning the PGA Championship is that it’s carried my dad’s memory on,” Love recalled.
“It certainly makes me think of my dad whenever I see a rainbow, and people all across the United States have gotten in touch with me and talked to me about their rainbow stories.”
