If you are a beginner golfer, or somewhat of a newbie, you are probably wondering if you will ever break 100. One of the things you can consider is having the right equipment so that your good shots are rewarded and the affect of your bad shots are minimized.
When you start looking for your new equipment, be honest with the sales person in the golf store to let them know you are just learning how to play. Since you are a beginner, you will want to make sure that the clubs you purchase use technologies that provide more forgiveness on the bad shots that you will surely make.
This means that you will have to take this into consideration on the types of shafts that you need, the lie of the club face is best, the lofts of the clubs and even the type of clubs that you will want to have.
For example, hybrid golf clubs have revolutionized golf because even if you hit them off-center, the clubs are so forgiving that you will get good results. The same is somewhat true for perimeter-weighted irons, but I personally think hybrids are easier to hit.
I would highly recommend that the iron set you purchase has at least a #3 hybrid.and a #4 hybrid, and better yet is if they have a #5 hybrid. I am even putting a #6 hybrid in my bag this year because as I have gotten older, I have lost enough golf swing speed that I have problems hitting my irons as far and as high as I used.
For your driver, you want to make sure you choose Titanium for the club head, as it is stronger, denser and lighter than steel. This allows golfers to increase their club head speed, along with the size of the sweet spot which will also offer more forgiving golf shots. ((Studies have shown you lose 10 yards for every 1/8″ of an inch you miss the sweet spot!!!))
Don’t forget about the fairway woods, these will probably be the clubs you hit most at the beginning. Unfortunately, until you learn how to hit the ball farther, you are going to have a lot of long 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and maybe even 5th shots. Look for fairway woods that have a low profile with the weight below the center of the ballwhich makes it easier for you to get the ball into the air.
And lastly, you will need a putt . This is an area where you can spend $25 or over $300, and there really is a difference in quality with the higher priced putters. As a beginner golfer, you do not need to spend the top amount, just find a moderate priced putter that feels good in your hands.
These are the basic things you consider, but then there are others that might come in play, such as offset face design which will prevent hitting slices by getting the club face back to the square position at impact.
Another thing you want to consider is graphite shaft vs. steel shafts. For the beginner golfer, graphite shafts are the most forgiving shafts for poorly hit shots and they also absorb vibration which will make a big difference since you will be hitting a lot of shots as a beginner golfer.
Once you have the equipment you need, you should consider golf lessons. But I’ll warn you, lessons are very expensive. A better approach to learning the correct golf swing , is by viewing videos that can easily be found online, or by using golf swing training aids to help you learn how to properly swing a golf club,
Other than that … him ‘em log, hit ‘em straight, and hit ‘em often.
